I started noticing this thing in Athens and maybe Milan too where the lobbies of apartment buildings are just quietly beautiful. I kept sneaking photos when no one was around, hoping nobody would scream at me, but honestly I could not help it. Milan feels like another level of luxury, really polished, but Athens has this charm that feels rooted in time.
A lot of the Athens lobbies feel like they belong to the 1960s or 70s, sometimes with Art Deco or Neoclassical touches. Big marble floors that almost glow when the light hits them, brass details that have aged just enough, high ceilings that make even small spaces feel important. Some are intimate and narrow, others feel grand in a quiet way, but they all feel like a first impression of the building and the lives inside.
You notice the materials straight away. White marble under your feet, wood paneling along the walls, mirrors that feel slightly ornate, metallic details in brass or aluminum catching bits of light. The layout is usually the same kind of idea, that typical Athenian polykatoikia where the shared ground floor lobby sits between the noise of the street and the privacy of the homes above. You also have these reception points where all numbers and names are listed on a wall upon entrance, you see this quite often in many Balkan countries, I wish London had something similar to this (not counting the boring ones on some flats we see) as it is quite refreshing. I remember in Turkey some of these names still belong to grandfathers name, even though his son or grandson might be living there now…
