An early Monday morning post from me! I got to visit the Rovaniemi Library back when I was in my first year of my architecture master’s in 2023, and honestly it stuck with me way more than I expected. The building was finished in 1965 and was the first piece of Rovaniemi’s administrative and cultural centre, and you can feel that “beginning of something” energy in it.
The library is split into two parts: this beautiful fan-shaped main hall and then a long, simple office wing. Inside, it has that classic Aalto move where the reading rooms sit slightly lower, tucked into their own little pockets. The whole fan-shape lets the staff see across the entire space in one sweep, which is such a quiet, elegant piece of logic. And beyond the hall, there’s a music library, magazine rooms, exhibition spaces, an auditorium, even a children’s area, it’s a whole world in there.
Light is basically a material here. Aalto pulls in indirect natural light from upper and roof windows, mixing it with all these special lamps he designed. It gives the place this calm northern glow that shifts with the seasons, from dark winters to endless summers. Some of the furniture is classic Artek, but a lot of pieces and lighting were specially designed just for this building. It feels intentional down to the smallest hinge.
